"David Golder" is the sophomore novel of the recently (re)discovered Russian immigrant Irène Némirovsky (best known for "Suite Française"), first published in France in and soon to be forgotten in the aftermath of the nazi occupation (the author herself having died in Auschwitz)/5.

David Golder is the product of what poverty and despair have created between them. It's a very powerful novel - the first one that Irene Nemirovsky published, when she was only 26 and living in France. Quite a startling feat for a young woman to portray the anguish of growing old and the fear of death.4/4(9).

Quite a startling feat for a young woman to portray the anguish of growing old and the fear of death/5(37).

If Suite Francaise was known more for its chequered year journey of as a manuscript seeking a publisher, David Golder is the book that launched Nemirowsky's career and is a /5(4). Translated by Sandra Smith, with an introduction by Patrick Marnham. Inyear-old Ir ne N mirovsky shot to fame in France with the publication of her first novel DAVID GOLDER.

At the time, only the most prescient would have predicted the events that led to her extraordinary final novel SUITE FRANCAISE and her death at Auschwitz. Yet the clues are there in this astonishingly mature 3/5(4).
